Abstract A better understanding of the environmental and genetic contribution to migratory behavior and the evolution of traits linked to migration is crucial for fish conservation and fisheries management. Up to date, a few genes with unequivocal influence on the adoption of alternative migration strategies have been identified in salmonids. Here, we used a common garden set-up to measure individual migration distances of generally highly polymorphic brown trout Salmo trutta from two populations. Fish from the assumedly resident population showed clearly shorter migration distances than the fish from the assumed migratory population at the ages of 2 and 3 years. By using two alternative an…

Variability of Spring Barley Traits Essential for Organic Farming in Association Mapping Population

2012

Association mapping population consisting of 154 Latvian and foreign spring barley genotypes contrasting for traits that are important for organic agriculture was established with the aim to develop molecular markers useful in breeding for organic farming. The mapping population was genotyped at 3072 single-nucleotide polymorphism loci using Illumina GoldenGate platform to provide marker data for association mapping. Field trials in two organically and two conventionally managed locations are being carried out during three seasons. The following traits essential for organic farming were phenotyped: plant morphological traits ensuring competitive ability against weeds, grain yield in organic…

The genome-wide structure of two economically important indigenous Sicilian cattle breeds1

2014

Genomic technologies, such as high- throughput genotyping based on SNP arrays, provided background information concerning genome structure in domestic animals. The aim of this work was to inves- tigate the genetic structure, the genome-wide estimates of inbreeding, coancestry, effective population size (N e ), and the patterns of linkage disequilibrium (LD) in 2 eco- nomically important Sicilian local cattle breeds, Cinisara (CIN) and Modicana (MOD), using the Illumina Bovine SNP50K v2 BeadChip. To understand the genetic rela- tionship and to place both Sicilian breeds in a global context, genotypes from 134 other domesticated bovid breeds were used. Principal component analysis showed that…

Genetic Diversity in Latvian Spring Barley Association Mapping Population

2012

Certified organic crop area is continuously increasing in European Union and in Latvia (Eurostat data), despite somewhat lower yield and higher potential for disease damage in organic farming. It is increasingly recognized that breeding varieties for organic farming requires focus on specific traits that may be less important under conventional agriculture. Molecular markers are becoming essential tools for plant breeding allowing reducing time and cost of development of new varieties by early selection of progeny with desired traits. However, there is lack of information on molecular markers for traits that may be important for organic farming, such as plant morphological traits ensuring c…

Genome-wide analysis in endangered populations: a case study in Barbaresca sheep

2017

Analysis of genomic data is becoming increasingly common in the livestock industry and the findings have been an invaluable resource for effective management of breeding programs in small and endangered populations. In this paper, with the goal of highlighting the potential of genomic analysis for small and endangered populations, genome-wide levels of linkage disequilibrium, measured as the squared correlation coefficient of allele frequencies at a pair of loci, effective population size, runs of homozygosity (ROH) and genetic diversity parameters, were estimated in Barbaresca sheep using Illumina OvineSNP50K array data. Moreover, the breed's genetic structure and its relationship with oth…

DSM-IV Combined Type ADHD Shows Familial Association With Sibling Trait Scores

2008

Contains fulltext : 69060.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a discrete clinical syndrome characterized by the triad of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity in the context of marked impairments. Molecular genetic studies have been successful in identifying genetic variants associated with ADHD, particularly with DSM-IV inattentive and combined subtypes. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) approaches to linkage and association mapping have yet to be widely used in ADHD research, although twin studies investigating individual differences suggest that genetic liability for ADHD is continuously distributed throughout the population, u…
